A Tale of Three Cities

Part 1
Freud and a Tale of Three Cities: Vienna, London and……. Orvieto. The Vienna home in Berggasse 19 is easy to spot (he lived and worked in a modest, of the dark flat on the mezzanine floor by to the Freud sign); London, 20 Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead is by comparison quite understated, just the Blue Plaque; Orvieto has nothing at all.

Footsteps: to Ypres a hundred years on

I went to Zonnebeke, Belgium in early December 2014 to see the area in which my grandfather Lt. Pat Somerville was captured on Oct 21st 1914. Read his account here. This first battle of Ypres fought only two months after the outbreak of war was where in a sense the war was won, neither Ypres the…

Guns of August

At 11 P.M. on August 4th 1914 Britain declared war after Germany attacked France through neutral Belgium. Now that all the great powers were involved, the lamps were going out, as Sir Edward Grey memorably said, all over Europe. The following photographs were taken by my grandfather Lieutenant ‘Pat’ Somerville from County Wicklow, Ireland. Lt….

Eve of the Great War February 1914, British subalterns on a troopship bound for Malta and then to Scutari to take part in the international boundary commission’s mission in newly independent Albania. Changing of the Guard

Changing of the guard at Camera Etrusca. What were you doing back in 1990? It was quite a lively year: the USSR collapsed, Nelson Mandela was freed, the Hubble space telescope was launched, Kuwait was invaded then liberated, while a man in London was liberated too…..of his briefcase at knifepoint – and of bonds worth £292 million, Sinéad…

Orvieto Olive Oil

Orvieto Olive Oil. The olive  hasn’t much to do with photography other than that olive groves end up being in a lot of landscapes. However, olive oil is one of the good things of Italy that most people appreciate while here. The olive is a truly remarkable fruit and you could happily survive on it…

Barabbata Festival

The Barabbata Festival is held every year on 14 May on the shores of Lake Bolsena in the fishing village of Marta near Viterbo. The festival is a catholicised re-enaction of pagan rites of spring and consists of parading a portrait of the Virgin through the town and up to the church at the top of…

Snow in Orvieto

Italy is undergoing the coldest, snowiest winter since 1985. I have been out and about in and around Orvieto doing landscapes and snapping my eight year old daughter playing in the snow with her pals. While I was photographing the sunset from the roof of the Land Rover she was out  playing with her friend…
